Arvidson celebrates 10 years of Opportunity Mars mission

Ten years ago, on Jan. 24, 2004, the Opportunity rover landed on a flat plain of the planet Mars and rolled into an impact crater scientists didn’t even know existed. Ray Arvidson, PhD, deputy principal investigator of the mission, recently took an audience on a whirlwind tour of the rover’s adventures and discoveries.

Weight loss surgery effective, but risk remains

Bariatric surgery is effective at helping patients lose weight and improve obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea, according to a review of published studies. Complications are possible, but death rates generally are low, according to School of Medicine researchers who performed the analysis.

Engineers provide free code to improve batteries

Lithium-ion batteries, such as those used in electric vehicles, are in high demand, with a global market value expected to reach $33.1 billion in 2019. But their high price tags and short lives need to be addressed before they can be used in more consumer, energy and medical products. Engineering’s Venkat Subramanian, PhD, and his team are working to solve this problem.

2014-15 tuition, board and fees announced

Undergraduate tuition at WUSTL will be $45,700 for the 2014-15 academic year — a $1,600 (3.6 percent) increase over the 2013-14 tuition, announced Barbara A. Feiner, vice chancellor for finance.

The Community Service Office wants to know who you think exemplifies a character of service and contribution. The Gerry and Bob Virgil Ethic of Service Award recognizes a few members of the WUSTL community every year. The deadline is Feb. 7.

Nominations open for Switzer award for graduating women

The Women’s Society of Washington University seeks nominations for the Harriet K. Switzer Leadership Award. The award is given annually to one or more graduating seniors, recognizing young women who made a significant contribution to WUSTL and have great potential to lead. The deadline is Feb. 7.
